Well, here's the short version: I let my front fuel tank sit empty for a couple of months, and had a long trip last weekend so i finally filled it up as well. During driving (highway), when my rear tank got to a quarter full, I switched to my full front tank. After about 5 minutes of driving the Fuel Filter light on my dash turned on and the engine started struggling like it was not receiving fuel. It also sent a few puffs of dark exhaust out. I switched back over to my rear tank and immediately the Fuel Filter light shut off and the engine went back to purring normally. I am guessing that sitting empty for a couple of months was not a good thing, but my question is what is the problem, and what can I do to fix it.
The fuel filter light is a restriction sensor on the side of the fuel bowl. If it's getting tripped by the tank that was dry, it would be a good idea to check that fuel line for any blockage that may have been picked up from sitting so long. I'd start there
Dave, we did dip down a few times to cold temps a couple weeks back, but we're in the mid 50's and 60's for the last 9 days or so. Damn you El Paso weather!!!
My problem is a lot like Big 350's but in reverse. I ran my rear tank down to about a quarter tank at which time the fuel filter light came on and the truck seemed to starve of fuel and wanted to die out. I switched to the front tank and the power came back and the truck ran fine. I refilled and ran the rear tank and this time the light came on at about half tank again going off as I switched tanks. I filled the tank one more time and this time the light came on within a couple of minutes of running the rear tank. I changed the fuel filter which was very dirty and the truck seemed to run fine for a day. Now the light is coming on under acceleration or during a pull up a long hill. As I get off of the accelerator the light flickers and goes off. This only occurs on the rear tank. When I replaced the fuel filter there seemed to be a lot of residue in the fuel bowl. I drained the bowl but was unsure as to how I should or if I should try to flush the remainder of this residue out of the bowl. Not sure if this is the problem or it's something with the rear tank. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!- Duane

You may need to drop the rear tank & see if there is a restriction in the pickup ...The lower the level of fuel ,the higher the concentration of "junk" ...
