I got a 1997 Saturn SL2 it is missing real bad, has no power. It keeps showing a number one cylinder misfire. We have replaced all the plugs and wires, replaced the fuel pressure regulator, fuel injector, coil. I dunno why but it did it right after replacing the thermostat in it. Kinda at wits end trying to figure out whats wrong with it.
I forgot to mention a few things. It keeps fowling the plugs out. I can clear the codes and it seems to run fine until the check engine light comes back on. I also should add the car ran a while with a decent exhaust leak close to the header.
There is a fairly simple redneck way of checking the cat. Well simpler on a truck than a car. Check that you can reach both the inlet and outlet pipes to the cat with one hand. With engine cold, start the engine and let it idle. Grab the inlet pipe to the cat with your hand and feel how warm it is, then grab the outlet pipe from the cat. Should both be similar (not exactly the same) temperatures. If the outlet pipe is a lot cooler then there is a good chance the cat is clogged.
If the cat is clogged then replace it or gut it.
That could throw the whole solar system out of whack. Someone better find it and put it back.
hahaha i was thinking the SAME thing. i was like HOLY CRAP!! REALLY?
also... start her up at night with all the lights off and see if you see any sparks, if a plug or wire isent connected then you might just see some sparks.
One thing you can do to check the spark is remove the plug wires at the coils. Have somebody crank the engine while you watch the coil towers, if the ignition module and coils are good you will see sparks between the coil towers. Since you already replaced a coil and if you have no spark at #1 coil suspect the igntion module. If spark is good and the plugs and wires are good I would check compression. My next bet would be a burned valve. Another problem with these engines is oil leaking into the spark plug holes from bad cam cover gasket. Also try squirting some carb cleaner around the intake gasket and see if there is any change in idle, this is a problem with the SL1 SOHC but it's worth checking.
