I have an 87 Ranger 4x4 5 speed. Sometimes when I push in the clutch to come to a stop, the clutch doesn't completely release and the truck still trys to pull. The fluid level is fine. Any ideas what it could be?
either you have air in the lines and they need to be bled/find out where/how air got into.. Or you have a bad master or slave cylinder. How to tell which one is bad im not sure.....hopefully/i think your slave cylinder is on the outside where the geniuses at ford should have left the newer ones at.
Thinking now it might be a bushing problem or the master. If I push the clutch in slow, shifts fine and no sticking. Has a ittle play in the pedal before it engages the push rod. Any thoughts?
If fluid is full and there isn't excessive play in the assembly I would suspect the master is at fault.
When the slave goes it usually pukes fluid out the bellhousing and at the very least will weep a little fluid.
The master cylinder's internal piston could be bleeding/ bypassing fluid, therefore you wouldn't getting full travel
However...
It could be air in the system as well. Maybe a cracked hydraulic line or fitting. Couldn't hurt to bleed the system and try. At least you would only be out a few bucks and some time to trouble shoot rather than buying a master cylinder for possibly no reason.

Whoever decided the internal slave cylinder was a good idea at Ford should have been shot..............They should have been left externally mounted like the 83-85s...........A 20 minute job on 83-85s, not involving dropping the transmission like everything since.
eeeerrr
Been there. sucks to pull the tranny and transfer case to fix the clutch slave cylinder. While your there put a new clutch in it. Replace everything.
Good luck..
