Not having any problems, but just curious, does anybody else have factory installed dual block heaters? I know a few other people with EFI 460s and I haven't seen any with dual block heaters from the factory. Any information on why mine has two?
I'd guess that one burned out, and rather than take it out the P/O just opted to put in a new one and call it a day. I've never seen or heard of dual block heaters from the factory, even on diesels.
My dad bought it new in '95, so not really any previous owner. He's never mentioned the block heaters ever being worked on and he gave me a splitter when I got the truck from him. He told me I would need to plug them both in so I assume they both are working units. Now you've got me curious though. I need to find my line splitter so that I can take a current measurement on both of the units.
My 95 had two.
Best thing I did for cold starting though was synthetic oil. It loved the 10-40. I think I used 10-30 with no loss in oil pressure (and no leaks either)
I'm going to have to find my line splitter this weekend while I'm home for Thanksgiving so that I can get an actual current reading off the block heaters. I don't think they can be 1000W each unless there's a serious problem with the breakers/fuses in my apartment since the only way to plug in a vehicle is to run an extension cord through my window and plug it in along with all of my other electric devices (I try to make sure everything else is off when I plug the truck in though).
I'm not so worried about warming from 0°. It's the days this winter when it's going to be -20°, with a 30+ mph wind blowing into the grill of my truck and I'm still expected to get to work that worries me. I've already stuffed two batteries under the hood since I was having issues starting my truck when it was that cold during college (no place to plug in in the dorm parking lot).
