I would have checked the location of the filter and any other things that might be in the way then determined a good spot to put the drain. I have installed many auto trans pan drain plugs, i typically put it on the side to keep from potentially getting hit. The main point of the plug is to drain most of the pan so it does not gush all over once you drop the pan. Even if you drop one end it still seems to splash and make a mess.
I have no idea if your location is good, most likely it is.
