-Make sure the motor doesn't hesitate and responds well when you ask it to do something
-Check the fluids and make sure they don't smell burnt
-With the engine warm and running, pull the oill fill cap, flip it over, and set it on the standpipe. It should gently slide around and not immediately flip off.
-Listen to the motor for any misfiring or uneveness during idle
-If it has 4wd, check put it in 4hi then 4lo and see if it engages.
-Try to turn the hubs manually, if they don't turn, you'll either need to grease or replace them.
-Check the front and rear tires for uneven wearing, they'll tell you if you need ball joints, tie rods, or all of the above.
-Play with the door locks and other power accessories and make sure they work properly. Power door locks not working are no big deal, we have a free and easy fix for them.
Check all the studs and nuts on the exhaust manifolds. They are prone to rust and breakage and are expensive to have fixed. I'd also try to find out if the ball joints have been replaced. At 75K they are due. A preventative/maintenance plug change is also a good idea at that mileage.
I bought an 01...we had a leaking windshield and the fuse box and Gem module were ruined. Expensive parts.
I replaced my hubs. Only down one exhaust stud.
Might want to check and see if you have a PI stamped on the side of the engine...I believe those were not introduced until the later half of 01...or was that 00? The PI build of the V-10 is the preferred block.
Lots of good posts here for things to do after you buy it...change the plugs, clean the MAS, etc.
Good luck and congrats on finding a great vehicle.
Replaced my exhaust manifold studs recently, and saw the PI stamp while I was in there. The first pleasant surprise so far with this thing Everything else has been "yup, they do that" kinda discovery. Working my way through the usual suspects and it hasn't dampened my approval of it, just keeps getting better. Would be boring if it was perfect right? I keep telling myself that
Thanks for all the advice. I left work early Friday to look at it and it has just been sold. However, I'm sold on the V10. It seems like gas prices are working in the buyers favor on these trucks. I'm not finding a ton around but the used market seems pretty thin still. So a late '01 or later is a preferred setup?
Depending on your budget, the later the year the better when it comes to the v10. 01+ gets PI heads and more power, 05+ gets the better 5 speed auto and even more power.
