What would cause excessive cranking?

Hey guys, looking for ideas on things to check, this is on a 351W MAF. Engines been rebuilt once in its life to .060 over. Has new

-Plugs (Gapped to .044)
-Wires
-Cap/Rotor/Distributor But old pickup coil
-IAC
-PCV valve
-Injectors cleaned/rebuilt w new screens/o rings/ caps
-MAF sensor cleaned, tested, reinstalled

Timing set to 10* tdc w/ spout disconnected.

Tried cycling the key multiple times, thought i might be loosing the fuel prime, but it has no effect on starting

Anything else you can think of for me to check? The truck has to crank for a full 10-15 sec before it will stumble to life, and unlike all the other fords ive owned, it doesnt roar strongly to life, just kinda spits and sputters and runs. Im running out of ideas here, HELP!!!!

I would be suspecting a leak in the high-pressure fuel line...

When you first turn on the ignition, the pump runs for a few seconds to pressurize he system. This might not be enough time if all the fuel has drained back into the tank.

Id agree with you, thats exactly what it seems like, the truck isnt getting fuel immediately, but when i said i cycled the key, i should have said i ran the fuel pump prime 6-7 times. This is plenty to reset the prime through the lines if it all leaked out... and there are no external fuel leaks..... thanks for the idea though, keep em comin!!!

Probably a long shot but is it possible it's losing compression in a few cylinders? Spark good and strong? Are the plugs dis-colored? Correct heat range?

Sometimes it's just a weak battery, does it turn slower than the usual? have it tested.

I had this on my 351w. When I checked fuel pressure it was losing it as soon as the pump went off. Turning the key a bunch of times didn't prime it. I figured it was the check valve on the high pressure fuel pump and left it alone. Now that I got a new motor in there it doesn't do it with the same pump. I'm suspecting a leaky injector killed my other motor. So check it out my oil didn't smell like gas either.

If you step on the gas a little before you hit the starter and hold it (so the throttle blades are open a bit) does that help?

Pull codes

gotta check fuel pressure, just priming wont tell you anything. is the injector wiring harness in the correct firing order? didnt you convert from speed density to maf?

Battery is brand new, sorry forgot that on the list. cranks over nice and fast.

Yes if i crack the throttle it does help the truck start faster, down from the 15 sec mark to about 10 seconds

Yes the injector wiring is in the correct order, once running it runs beautiful, idles kinda rough, occasionally surges at idle when cold

No, i replaced the 302 originally in the truck with a 351w, and reused the 302 MAF computer and controls.

Ill check codes in a little bit, see what pops up

Thanks for the ideas, keep em coming!!

bump the timing up to 12* btdc with spout removed. might regap the plugs to .50 also if you feel up to it.

the tps may need testing and clean the IAC or replace if its old.

and your computer may need tuned for the larger motor

OK so what happens when you put your foot on the floor and hold it there while cranking?

a dyno shop would do the tune.

you may also be a tooth off when you dropped the dizzy. get the motor to tdc and take the cap off to see where the rotor is pointing.

Same thing, helps with starting, cuts down crank time to about 10 sec.

Hmm... dont know of any dyno shops in my area off hand, gonna have to look into it.

Im as confident as i can be I got the dizzy in correctly, I got quite a bit of practice stabbing it when i was dealing with a faulty pip sensor. But i will check that out this weekend. Sorry, didnt get a chance to check for codes, works been busier than i planned on. Will probably not get a chance to do any actual work on the truck until sun now
