My In-laws just purchased a used 2000 Excursion Limited 4x4 with a V-10/AT. It has just over 82k on it. Right when you are about to come to a stop, it makes a clunk sound, and sometimes it will do it again when you take off. They brought it back to the dealer, (90 day drivetrain warranty) and they had it all day, and said they couldn't find anything wrong. They also took it to another shop, that suggested maybe the leaf spring bushings were bad. The dealer said the PO of the rig used it mainly for hauling a car around. Could that have anything to do with it? Also, I looked at the motor in this thing and where the heck are the spark plugs at? Does it have one of those new coil on plug sytems or something? Thanks for any help.
Same problem with my X
makes a clunk when coming to a stop
brought it to the dealer and they told me my ball joints were
gone!
parts only cost $70 with shipping(no one had them had to order online)
The truck goes in this week so i will find out if that is what it is
The weird thing is that i can go off road and never hear the noise
Spark plugs are indeed under the coil on plug thingys. They are yellow on top.
As for the clunk, could be many things from caliper bolts to the slip-yoke.
If it were my truck I'd look into the slip yoke. Check out the Super FAQ located at the top of the Super Duty forum. There is a link in there for lubing the slip yoke.
Can you tell about where the klunk is heard. Mine had a klunk on the floor board driver's side. It needed body mount bushing work. Had it in several times till it was done right. Might be able to check with dealer to see what repair issues have been documented with that truck.
just got the truck back from the shop
the ball joints were completely gone
they were seized and had to be torched off!!!
Any way it fixed the problem i was having and now the only other noise i have is caused by the slip yoke
i will probably grease it this weekend
