hi, i have been looking for some advice about what route i should go with my f250. its a 2001 f250 with a 5.4, its an auto and to date it has 160k miles and has seen better days. right now the trans is slipping pretty badly under nearly any load and it has blown two different sparkplugs on the passenger side that i fixed with helicoils. well i was driving it the other day and a third sparkplug blew on the drivers side and helicoiling a third cylinder is out of the question.
now im wondering what is the best option. the truck has seen better days so when i get the time im going to attempt a full rebuild. im debating between rebuilding the 5.4 with a goal of 400 hp at the crank, and then swapping in a 5 speed. or going big and swapping in a 12 valve cummins with a goal of around ~550ftlbs at the crank and a 5 speed. either way it will have a 5 speed and no more autos ever.
has anyone done anything like this or has any input as to what they would do? im open to any suggestions.
I dont know much about motor swaps or rebuilding motors but someone on here has replaced their Ex's motor with a cummins, im sure someone will chime in on this
its a farm truck so it subjected to all kinds of abuse. i also haul my 25 foot enclosed snowmobile trailer with it. and its also been through a mud run once or twice... pretty much the only thing i dont do with this truck is plow snow and thats only because a bobcat is way more fun.
personaly id suggest a cummins swap it really depends on what you want in the end, im also not sure how much you can wake up the 5.4 im looking into that as well because ive got the same engine
I think ive made up my mind about what im going to do. When i have time this winter im going to start to pull it apart and im going to order everything i need off this website Fordcummins.com - Cummins Conversion Install Manuals
to drop in a 5.9l cummins.
