steering

Hey guys, I need some more help. I have about 2 inches of play in my steering wheel. The truck walks going down the road and im haveing to compensate a lot. I can move the steering wheel right to left about 2 inches before it catches. I checked everything on the front end and it is tite. my next guess is the steering box. I thought I would get some insite from you guys before I drop 400 bucks on a steering box. Can anyone help? thanks.

Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you look at stuff under the truck. Visually inspect each steering joint and the steering box. If the input shaft to the steering box is moving but the pitman arm isn't, then the problem is the box. If the pitman arm moves with the input shaft then it is OK.

Also lift the truck off the ground, put it on jack stands and have someone work the wheel up and down while you look at the upper and lower ball joints. There shouldn't be any visible play.
