Finally getting annoyed enough by the sloppy steering to look at a new steering box. When i did ball joints a few weeks ago, had a friend rock steering wheel while I was under the truck, and it is definitely the box, pitman sits there while steering wheel moves over 2 inches back and forth.
Edit: I was thinking all wrong so removed what I said
But the following has been found to be a problem. A 1/4" of play here can translate to an inch or more play at the steering wheel.
If there is slop between section 1 and section 2 it will cause excess play in the steering wheel. Certainly worth a look. Someone has previously posted about this problem. If I find the thread I will post it.
Thanks all for the leads on parts, and more options to look at before I go to the expense of replacing the box. Will take a peak at that column shaft tonight hopefully.
Being as I am back to driving the Ford daily for a while, while the deer is removed from the engine compartment of the wife's Honda, I seem to notice one more thing everyday I NEED to do to the Ford while she drives my yota commuter around. Too bad the deer deductible is 500, that was going to be my trans work and wicked wheel next month.... At least i get to drive the preferred truck everyday with a good excuse for now
Redhead steering gears is what I have in my truck. I like it. For adjustment, there is a nut and an allen key and you loosen the nut and tighten the allen in order to take up a llittle slack at a time in the steering gear box. Only tighten about 1/4 turn at a time because it can bind. Steer left and right to make sure it doesn't bind when you are stopped.

I have helped a few do this and it works so give it a try.
Well, I remember my Dad back in the day telling me about the pump procedure and him tightening them a bit, might as well give mine a twist too, my steering is sloppy too.

Pops...It will work I bet.Mine is so much better.Have some one move the wheel back in forth while you tighten the box.
I put a redhead in at 75k. It lasted 5k before it had play. I had it warrantied. I know have play again at roughly 5k. Redhead would like me to try adjusting it. Or I can send it back and they will check mine out, but I will be without a truck. I am really leary about having to adjust this box after only 5k. Once you adjust it, does that just speed up the box's death.
You are welcome Pops...Hope it works for ya
Make sure when you test drive the truck after the adjusting that the wheel will come back on it's own when you make a turn.
