Steering Wheel Slop.

I have about 2-3" or steering wheel movement before I feel anything very solid in the steering.. (lots of steering wheel input for minor corrections when driving down road) My tie-rods are good and just replaced driver side ball joints (doing passenger side in the morning). Had wife move SW back and forth as I looked for problems. All I can see is the steering shaft moving, as it enters steering box, and no movement in steering components. I can feel a bit of movement and what feels like gear slop when I hold the shaft on the bottom side of the steering box...

Can the steering box be adjusted to remove the slop?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Ya you can adjust the steering box, there should be a nut with a slot screw in the top of it on the top of the box. Loosen the nut and turn the screw.I think its been said you have to jack the front tires off the ground to do it but i did it before i heard that. And i think there is a set amount that you can screw it in before it can damage the box, making it to tight. I did mine a quarter turn at a time and i think it was 3/4 of a turn and it got alot better. But overall there is a little play in every superduty ive ever driven and most can probably agree i dont think it will ever be as tight as a honda. good luck

That seems like a lot of play. Is your truck lifted? If so make sure the nut holding on the pitman arm is TIGHT. From my experiance also, when the ball joints are bad, it makes turning tough! I would check them. If you don't succed with adjusting the box, do yourself a favor and get a Red Head steering box, some of the best money I've spent on my truck.
