voltage gauge drop off

I have a 1996 f-250 with the 7.3 L diesel and I am having issues on start. I wait on glow plugs, start the motor, and the voltage bottoms out near the 8 on the gauge, stays there for awhile, then clicks over and seems to show charging. But the truck is starting slower and slower. At night the lights stay dim for a minute or so after start then pop back bright. Is this possibly a glow plug issue. Not good at electrical. Replaced 1 glow plug last year and alternator 4 months ago.

Have you checked the voltage at the batteries with a multimeter?

I'd do that, let us know what you find, if you are truly at 8ish volts, you will never start the truck, I think you need to have at least 10v to start the truck...

You might want to check all your wiring to the starter... Might even take the starter and batteries to an Orielly's and have them load tested...

It is normal for the dash lights to stay dimmer until the glow plugs shut off and then they get brighter.. But the starting slower and slower has me thinking batteries or starter related issue...

Thank you for the quick reply. I am going to pull my batteries and charge them and take them to be tested. I was under the cover on top of motor and also have a fuel leak somewhere near the filter. Looks like from the gold part with two nots or bumps on top. Is that a fuel pump, sensor ? I don't know. Has a big nut between what looks like twe fuel lines, one going towards the back of each manifold. Sorry for so many questions. Just new with diesels.

You're actually right on the money there. That gold bump you see is indeed the fuel pump, and it is not at all uncommon for that big bolt in the back to loosen up over time and develop a slight leak. It is difficult to reach but you can do it with a 1 1/4" Combination wrench. I suggest you try to give it a bit of a tightening up and see if that takes care of the issue. If not, the hoses may be rotted or the pump may need to be replaced. Try tightening the bolt first then report back. There is more we can instruct you on in regard to the hoses and the pump, but if it is just the Banjo Bolt (the big bolt we're talking about) it's an easy fix.

fuel leak issues

Ok, Sorry for the delay in reply. hard to get 1 1/4 that would fit. Tightened banjo bolt and cleaned diesel from pooling under turbo and fuel filter canister. Started it up, runs fine. Took an inspection mirror and tried to look under everything. Still has leak. Seems to be coming from under the fuel filter cannister or from under the fuel pump. Could see the three blue fuel hose connections and did not see any dripping but still getting fuel under there somewhere. Friend said that the metal fuel lines that run from under pump and run back to the back of the heads somewhere are notorious for coming loose, cracking, and/or leaking. Is this a tough job to get under the turbo. Lot of stuff in there. Are there any diagrahms available that show motor top side parts and exploded view of how they come apart and what they are. Have never worked on a motor like this before. any help is greatly appreciated and sorry for the long delayed response, been super busy before holidays. Thanks

And about the leak the fuel restriction sensor in the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) coul leak. Its not common that the metal fuel lines to the bak of the heads leak.

In the pic below you can see the banjo bolt that they are telling you to tighten up.. Between the bolt head and spacer that the fuel lines are attached to, there is a washer that seals that, then there is another washer between the spacer and the pump body. One of those washers could be leaking, the bolt could be loose, then the weep hole is on the bottom by the banjo bolt. If it's leaking out of the weep hole, the pump must be changed. Also, there should be a black cover over those 2 blue fuel lines to prevent them from cracking b/c of the heat from the turbo. If it is there, all you have to do is pull up on the cover and it will pop off the fuel lines so you can check out the fuel lines too.

Here's a pic that shows some misc parts, but the stock fuel pump in the valley and the fuel bowl aren't there.
