So I chose to use the C6 I picked up for my truck over the AOD. I have the tag for both transfer case pictured below. What would be the best one to use with the C6 if either one can work? The round tag came with the older C6 transfer case.
both T-cases are out of 1980's fords one is a np208 and the othe is probably a borg-warner if it doesn't look the same as the 1st one. I would keep looking for a np205 or if you have to use one of these use the np208, Both of these are alum cases. I have seen the borg-warners crack in half from heavy abuse.
The New Process tag is for a chain-driven NP208... used in the 80-86 F-Series.. it has a narrow chain and is weaker than an NP203 which uses a thick chain. The NP205 is gear driven.
The aluminum tag is for a BorgWarner 1345 - Also an 80-92 Ford aluminum/magnesium T-case and uses ATF lube.
Both are OK.. I'd prolly stick with the NP cuz it's less costly to rebuild and it's not an alloy case. Gimme steel.
The NP208 one came with the C6 I got. The other 208 was behind an AOD.
On the NP208 the guy said it would sometimes pop out of 4 low. I'm really not that worried about it, I don't do a lot of off roading. I usually just us 4 wheel drive for when I tow and need the extra grip.
He said the C6 shifts a little hard going into second.
I'll contribute what little I know. The borg-warner 1345 is the first iteration of a chain driven t-case that later became the BW1356. The 1356 was mostly an improvement in case strength and internal oiling over the 1345 (though coincidentally the 1356 internal oil pump can fail on high mileage units). I've rebuilt a BW 1356 and it is indeed a very stout chain. And it was installed clear up into one tons.
The only New Process t-case I'm familiar with is the 205 and it's absolutely stout but also absolutely heavy. You can practically install an aluminum/magnesium case chain driven t-case with your bare hands without a jack, which is actually pretty handy.
I have no experience whatsoever with the 208 (or the 1345), but I know the next generation of the 1345 (the 1356) is a very good case (excepting it's one issue of the internal oil pump working free of it's mounting and thus failing after high miles). I would GUESS the 1345 is a worthy t-case for a general use 4x4.
If you don't really use 4wd that often, I would go with the one attached to the trans you plan on using. They are both decent t-cases and unless you offroad it much i highly doubt you would notice a difference between the two.
