quick question

Well I was wondering what might be worn out to make it difficult to shift into 1st and reverse every now and then. Sometimes it goes in right away other times I need to put it in a gear on the opposite side of the gearbox first. In newer cars I think its the shifter bushing but do our trucks have these since the shifter goes straight into the transmission instead of having the linkage cable 'thing'.

3 or 4 speed? This is normal. On the 4 speed, 1st and reverse are not synchronized so you have to be almost stopped to shift into them. You might have to shift into 2nd or another gear to line up the gears to get 1st or reverse. Another trick is to let out the clutch in a gear to the friction point and then shift. Try driving a 65 Falcon 200-6 with a non-syncro'ed 1st gear 3 speed. You had to be almost stopped for finding 1st.

You can also double clutch it. Big trucks are not synchroed and that's how you shift them. Push clutch in shifter to N let clutch out push clutch in shifter to gear. With practice you will get quick.
