Finally, something cheaper oh a diesel than a gasser
Took the Truck in for its annual inspection which usually cost around $42 bucks here in Houston. Inspector came back with in 5 minutes and said $12.50 please ! Could believe it..... Said it was cheaper because they do a safety check of diesel's and dont have to put them through emission testing....

Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties are the same way... is it just Harris county that smogs cars down there? I don't know if you have any gassers, but Ft Bend isn't far, I know that my car is registered in Lubbock county (no smog) but got when it was inspected in Dallas it had to be tested no matter where it was from, I wonder if the reverse is true... take a car registered in Harris county and get it inspected somewhere else to avoid the smog check. The $45 vs $12.50 hurts when you're running multiple cars through...

In Texas, if your vehicle is registered in a county where they do smog checks, you have to get it inspected somewhere where they can do the smog test (thus costing $42). If it is registered in a county that doesn't require it, you can get just the standard safety inspection. Not sure what happens if you are registered in a non-smog county and try to inspect it in a smog county though.

Less is always a good thing but I don't even see the need for the $12.50.
I'm sure you take care of your truck and do your own safety tests.
I'm glad Alabama doesn't have these tests (yet).
Random side question;
Is it true some states emission testing require the engine be rev'ed to redline during testing?
What if it sits for an hour while you wait and the first thing they do is start and redline?

They did perform the test on a mini-dyno. Rear tires were on a drum and they made a lot of noise when they were spinning at, oh, 95 mph. I don't know for sure and just spent a half hour googleing "utah diesel emissions test procedure" to no avail. The one common theme in all of the test descriptions is that the sensors are reading exhaust "opacity" or lack thereof. They measure the amount of smoke coming out of the pipe.
Utah code also requires an immediate failure (and potential fine) due to the removal of any diesel emissions control device. This is pretty much the same language used for removal of catalytic converters on cars.

I know this sounds a little out of character for me but I have very little patience for these kinds of things. All the emissions stuff is rooted in people who think like this:
