turning up pump

So i was thinking about turning up the pump. I have a egt gauge already so i could tell the temp. All my buddies do it on the cummins but non of them have an IDI. What do you guys think? if its ok to do how much should i turn it up?

go one step at a time, and if you're able to blow black smoke, that smoke is wasted money with no more power. keep it in moderation.

Not sure of what else is done to your truck, but as mentioned, black smoke is a waste of fuel. At that point you're getting more fuel than air, so if you hit a limit, and your EGT's are still low, try to modify or improve your air intake to get more air in to it.

1 flat or 1/6 of a turn i usually the measurement used.

where do you turn the fuel up at? i think im running lean, because i have a banks turbo and as far as i know there has been no adjustment to the pump.
