any tips for taking these apart?
it's out of a truck
has 'oil to water' transmission cooler
fordomatic trans ( very grungy )
2 bbl and cast iron manifold
crossover exhaust
Howdy and Welcome aboard!
Well it might depend on what you're planning to do with it after you take it apart!
It's just a V-8. there's no real special way to disassemble it different from any other V-8.
If you're planning to rebuild, and resize rods, re-do heads etc, you don't even need to number anything.
If you're going to try to re-use rods, pistons cam followers etc.....You should probably mark everything in such a way that you can put them back into the same "hole"(s) they came out of....
Couple of things come to mind. Pay attention to where the long head bolts come out. A few misc. bolts in the engine run into the water jackets and will need sealer. Rocker oiling in these engines is through the #3 cam bearing and they do tend to get stopped up. Note the timing marks are not what you might expect.

Well, that might be problematic. you won't know until you get in there.
Ditto on the head bolt lengths. In fact there's more than a few assembly errors that might need to be addressed.
To remove front pulley/damper, use a damper puller, not a 2 or 3 jaw puller. And hammers and crow bars on the damper arent good ideas either. Cam followers i.e. lifters, solid lifters, mushroom lifters.
