I have a 79 F250 Ranger 4x4, and the bed is completely rotted out (in Connecticut) very common up here....I was thinking of removing bed and building a flatbed using PT wood, but on the other hand, I really love the look and use of the bed...Heres my question, has anyone either built a bed using wood or replaced it with a used bed? And if so, how difficult and time consuming can it be? I really need some motivation to get going on this!
Replacing the bed is one of the easiest things there is. Disconect the tail lights and fuel filler neck. Then there is 6 or 8 bolts in the bed floor going to the frame, take those off and lift off. But if you have that much rust, odds are theyre just as rusty and corroded. So that might make it a fairly interesting, time consuming, pain in the ****. As far as building a wooden flatbed. I wouldnt. Build it out of some nice diamond plate, put a nice thick coat of enamel on it, and undercoat it like theres no 2maro.
I sold a bed off a 74 high boy today it took less than 15 min to take it off and have it loaded on a trailer but that was using torches and a tow truck with a 16' boom on the back and it wouldnt take much more than 15 mins to re bolt one on with air tools and a helper top side.
no torches or air tools its a day long job.
building a wood flat is as easy or hard as you want to make it. plan on a Saturday with a buddy to build it.
Thanks...I'm gearin towards picking up a bed thats already off a truck, seen a few for sale close to me....and as far as my current bed, i can probably just lift it right off once i disconnect filler and lights (hardly anything left to floor) I can see most of the bolts thru the floor, probably just cut em off with saws all....and im guessing its a good idea to clean up frame before installing new bed...Any idea if lining up bed with cab is automatic if i grab the right bed? Or would i have to make adjustments using bushings/washers/etc..?

Im gunna say no as ive never seen any use anything like that. There should be nut clips on the frame the bolts go through, i suggest taking care not to break them if they arent already. Then i would pick up some new bolts via hardware store along with a wire wheel some rattle can enamel. Id say a 5hr job with a friend and liquid patience.
Nice...i can handle that no problem, I'll post some pics of the project once I get started...weathers gettin cold over here...maybe pick up some guiness and invite my brothers over!
