starter just clicks
my starter only clicked today. even when i bypassed the the starter relay. so i did a trick that my grandfather told me. tap it with a hammer. now it works. this has worked for some other people before. does anyone know why it does?

My uneducated guess would be that striking the starter with a hammer causes bad brushes to vibrate and make a better connection (temporarily, most likely) If it happens again I would look at replacing brushes in the starter or buying a rebuilt unit.

Since you tapped the starter and it started up then it is probably your starter. BUT, it could also be that your positive cable to your starter was looke and the tapping somehow made it get a better connection. I would maybe first clean the cable and put it back on and see what happens.

That hammer trick will for work for a while, but just keep in mind that more than likely it is a sign of a starter going bad, so if you drive this truck much, you probably should consider replacing the starter soon.
