Potential timing problem

I have a 1990 F250 4x4 with the 5.8. Folks here have helped me with several problems along the way to making this truck reliable. Truck seems to run great and starts right up but doesn't want to crank or start easily after it's warmed up. It has a new battery and a new coil. I was going to replace the ignition module next but wanted to check ignition timing first to rule that out. I hooked up the timing light onto #1 plug wire (front passenger side) and pulled out the spout connector, but I can't see the timing marks anywhere while it's running.....only see the opposite side of the balancer. This motor can't be 180 degrees out and still run can it? What am I missing? Thanks for any help on thisw.

I wipe down the balancer with degreaser then I use a crayon to highlight the timing mark I am shooting for. I have my 1992 F350 w/5.8L engine running with 14 BTDC timing.

It is not uncommon to have the outer ring slip on these older balancers, that may be why you can't see yours with the timing light.
