Had my 1999 drw 7.3 now for a year and half with 20,000 miles driven on it with no issues .... just lately been having a loss of power
first time I noticed i came to a quick stop yesterday ... service engine light came on and when i accelerated no go and no power ... motor was still running. Light went off ... hit the accelerator and no issues, took right off.
Took to get the oil changed today ... plenty of oil and had codes pulled but nothing showed. Later this evening .... gunning it around 50 and declerating noticed loss of power with the check engine light on. While declerating I had no power ... hit the gas and nothing .
Its like someone turns a switch on/off and either i have power or i dont. Engine never stops running .... ANY IDEAS ?
If you step on the go pedal and the engine doesn't rev up any, it sounds like the throttle position sensor, or since you have a 99, maybe you can get by with just a new IVS.
cps is the sensor that fails on these trucks alot .... two bolts and it comes off .... real easy to remove ... TPS makes some sense too ..... but do i have one on the 99 ?dont mind replacing both just for safety .... neither one are that expensive

The CPS is a magnetic sensor that reads slots in the cam gear and sends that information back to the PCM to determine timing. Problems with the CPS signal means a intermittent or permanent loss of the signal to the PCM. When this happens, the engine will either cut out, stall, or possibly just have a miss if the signal is off a bit.
You can see the slots in the cam gear in this photo. The small slot around 8 o'clock and the large slot around 2 o'clock represent the TDC and BDC reading.
The TPS and IVS control the electrical signals for the skinny pedal. If you step on the pedal and get no response from the motor other than a smooth idle, or maintaining whatever you had before you mashed on it, then it's likely in the pedal assembly. The earlier model trucks had a separate IVS mounted on the TPS that could be changed separately. I think around 02 or so they changed it so you had to replace the entire TPS.
So the question is, when you mash the skinny pedal and it doesn't act right, is the engine running smooth or rough? Which symptoms do you have?
where is this sensor on the pedal?? ..... how do i clean it and it sounds like after cleaning it let the sensor sit for 24 hours to dry out before starting
also might just replace the CPS too .. my tech at ford told me its not that hard to do .... its visible and u just remove two 10mm threads ? something like that
I had the CPS replaced on my '01 after having some problems and taking it to the dealer for diagnosis. About two weeks later I received a recall notice from Ford for the CPS. The dealership gladly refunded my money when I took the recall notice in. I would check and see if it's covered on your '99 as well. It might be worth a shot.

Great forum !!! ...... Went to a Ford dealer after all the input the forum gave me .... I felt 99% sure that it was the IVS sensor failing ...... but had no time to wait to get the sensor from washington ...... Ed the part guy ... so i found a ford store on my way up to get my new fifth wheel ..... and got a whole OEM pedal assembly from the Ford store.
Throttle repsonse was better and not a hickup from that point forward or hauling the fifth wheel home. Its interesting that when this problem was occuring i also noticed intermittently my tranny jerking and shifting funny .... I attribute that now to the IVS switch engaging and disengaging haphazardly ..... and or the TPS going too
Thanks everyone who responded .... when at the Ford store I got a new CPS sensor .... wow ... $20 bucks .... price has come down .... so I will look at the old one under the truck ... make sure i know how to take it out ... and leave the new one in the glove compartment box and replace the old one when it fails !
