m5od help please!

ok i am trying to do that transmission bushing modification to take teh slop out of my shifter. i have the bushings changed out but now that i'm putting the shifter back in, it is basically frozen in place. i'm trying to remember if i was in gear when i pulled the shifter out. is there an easy way to tell? is there an easy way to get back into neutral? i'm feeling like an idiot so please spare me the grief. thanks!

look down into the top of the tranny to see if all the slots (that the shifter travels through) are lined up. if not, its most likely in gear.

M5OD has a lot of slop in the shifter.
