header coatings
header coatings
whats up guys.......i have a question? i have heard of jet hot and classic coatings. any other company out there besides these 2. anyone with experience or knows someone that used these 2 companys. good or bad. costs for coating. i bought new full lenght hooker headers and want to coat it but, i want to hear from anyone who had it done. i'm probably going to put it on during xmas......if time allows for it. i have hedman shortys on right now that are thermal coated from summit. any feed back on this is appreciated before a choice is made.
The first set of Flowtech headers I bought back 15yrs ago I had ceramic coated after the fact and they stood up quite well considering the conditions up here in the great salty north. I believe the system used was JetHot but I can't be certain now, but whatever is used the headers have to be correctly prepared first which means sandblasted and degreased and then you won't have any isues with the coating flaking off. When it was all said and done I spent as much or more on the headers as I would have on a factory coated set so it's not exactly the most cost effect route.
call around your area, i got mine ceramic coated for $120. bummer was the prep wasnt done well and it didnt show itself till the new motor was in and i was of course moved across the state. They offered to fix but who wants to tear there headers back off, such a pain in the **** ya know. But i say its worth it and will decrease underhood temps big time.
I have Bassani shorty headers for my 351W. I purchased them in 1998 and they were chrome. I just took them to a local place and had them coated with ceramic. It only cost $225 for the pair. Not bad in terms of price and I think with the ceramics they have now days (they guy told me this would withstand 2500 degrees) you will be happy.
thanks for the feed back everyone!!!! the reason i got the headers un-coated cause it was seen at a swap meet and the seller was asking $100 bucks. i couldn't pass it up. it was cheap and i didn't have to pay for shipping. i understand that it could be cheaper just buying it coated already. i just needed to read the feed back from everyone on this issue before the next step was taken. i will look around and make a few calls to see what would better as far as coating and shipping of the headers to and from the facility and buying the headers already coated and shipped. again thanks everyone for the feed back. its appreciated.

I just realized, I have some exhaust wrap I can sell you. I bought it and was going to use it but just decided not to so the wrap is still in the original packaging and I also have the ties to secure the ends of the wrap to the headers. If you are interested, PM me. I think the wrap is a titanium color.

If you decide not to plop down the cash on ceramic coating, I had the chrome sand-blasted off my new MAC headers, and painted them with Rustoleum satin black BBQ paint. Holding up good for about a year now, but the truck doesn't really see snow or rain.
It doesnt matter what coating you use....in time your headers will develop corrosion/rust. As long as there is an electrolyte present such as water or oxygen, electrical current will pass through all metals touching, exposed or not and force it to change iron back into it's natural state. Formally known as rust (oxidation/reduction) You can't prevent it..but only decrease the time it takes for it to start. Another thing is that your headers are bolted to your exhaust and the hardware used is steel as well. If there is rust already present on them....you're now exposing your fresh headers to rust. Rust is like cancer....spreads onto anything it touches.
What I did was Black Nickel plated my headers. High phosporus nickel deposition and baked them for hyrdogen embrittlement (changing atom structure) to not only make them harder but they will not flake. A great form of corrosion resistance, and they look sweet. Not to mention, they will not tarnish black like chrome headers do because they are already black! Have a look, maybe something you can look into. There's a difference between decorative plating...and Industrial plating. Chrome headers you see are decorative plating....what you see on mine are Industrial. I like how they turned out, i think they are pretty sweet.
