That's a classic high EGT failure event! The bowl area of the piston has a larger mass to radiate the heat away quickly, the ring lands being the thinnist c/s with a nice sharp edge to allow heat to concentrate will fail in that manner almost exclusively, and there will usually be a few melters in each engine.
