2011 5 liter towing

Here's my scenario and or question: Will a 2011 F150 with 5 liter V8 and 3.55 ratio axle (limited slip), with SuperCab (extended cab) and 6 1/2 foot bed with 2 wheel drive be more than adequate to tow an S-285RLS Shadow Cruiser travel trailer with a GVWR of 7,660 lbs., plus a 460 lb. Triumph motorcycle in the bed of the pickup?

This setup will be expected to travel from central Illinois to central Texas (1100 miles one way) in November and then make the return trip from TX to IL in April, each year. A few hills but no really steep inclines. Ok , F150 lovers, let me know, please.

The 5.0L won't have any issue towing the weight...But you will want to check your trucks spec's to find out excatly how much it is rated to tow as its not safe to overload any truck.

Good luck.

Page 31 of the 2011 F150 brochure gives payload and trailor weight ratings for most of the possible combinations. One thing i would like to verify is can you put max payload in the box and still tow the max trailorload

No, if you put max load in the bed then you don't have any allowance for the tongue weight of the trailer

Thanks all!!! I have a Superchips Cortex tuner and am waiting on my new aFe custom exhaust system to arrive. Other than adding the exhaust system and then putting on air bag overloads on the rear suspension, I plan on doing no more to the truck unless it would be to install a new cold air induction (CAI) system. At one time I highly considered installing a Boss 302 Intake manifold. I don't think I'll be lacking on either horsepower or torque.

Your set up gets you a 14900 lb GCVWR and a 9500 lb tow rating which means your truck weighs in at about 5400 lbs. You should have a payload in the area of 1600-1800 lbs.

This is exactly why I am leaning towards a F250 Crewcab SB with the 6.2. The trailer we are getting is over 7K empty, add a canopy on the truck, 3 dogs and 3 people and their stuff and I could easily overload the F150 from a payload perspective, not max tow perspective. I personally want to have too much truck vs not enough truck....
I just can't find a trailer that will let me stay in the F150 that meets our family needs. Can't get rid of the dogs, or the family either.... So F250 will be our next vehicle once I decide to move on from my current Excursion with the 7.3.

Thanks Truckerdude for the reply .I bet a lot of people do not factor in box load weight as part of your tongue load

I think I should be ok with my F150. A 7,660 pound travel trailer (fully loaded) not dry weight and a 460 pound Triumph motorcycle in the back of my truck.
Plus driving from central Illinois to central Texas, I won't be in any mountains or really steep hills. Hitch/tongue weight is around 660 lbs. for this trailer and my bike is 460 lbs. - so combined that's 1120 lbs. With a payload of 1600 to 1800 lbs. that should leave me around a minimum of 480 lbs. to the "good" and maybe a couple more hundred lbs. And yes, I may be cutting my payloads and tow loads sort of close, but no mountains or steep grades. I read the road test that Mike Levine did with a 5.0 liter pickup on his website pickups.com and he towed a test trailer of 8000 lbs and he claimed the F150 handled it with no sweat. Levine said he felt the 5.0 liter V8 F150 had lots of head room left. I guess I'll be finding out. I may be crying the blues before long and dealing for an F250. :-)

The 5.0L will handle the job with no issues, the truck could be the question. When figuring payload, that also includes passengers. 480 lbs to spare isn't much when figuring adults, kids, dogs, etc.
