The fuel pump primimg at weird times with the engine off was another symptom I had with my truck. Our symptoms were exactly the same. Changed distributor (PIP sensor inside) and everything has been fine. You can change the pip sensor but you have to take dizzy out and have some special tools to remove the gear and put the gear back on. A new dizzy comes with a new pip and it's a pretty easy job to replace. I bought a remanufactured dizzy and it works fine for now. Some others on this forum would disagree and will tell you to buy a new one. I took my chances and have had no problem for a month.
another thing to look at is any shorted wires. ive had 2 dif trucks now that the engine wire harness on the back of the intake rubbed thru the harness and would short out like that. just an idea.
i replaced the distributor and still the same thing. when it quits i dont have any spark from the coil, i have power on both sides of the coil with the key on and when the engine is cranking
Is the replacement distributor rebuilt or brand new? Many of the so-called "rebuilt" units have bad PIPs in them because the remanufacturer does not heat test it.
Another test you can do is unplug the computer (PCM) then see if you have spark. If you do...it's a bad PCM.
You may need to start tracing down wires. as well. Never overlook the simple things.

I thought this was my problem because when I moved the wire the fuel pump would run and I would get fire, I looked back there and the plastic around the wires was melted but I took the upper part of the intake off and got the wiring harness out and none off the wires are melted
