Hey everyone. I'm on the market for a new truck and I was looking at a newer Ranger 4x4, 4.0L, manual. I was just wondering what information you guys could give me as far as reliability, maintenance, performance. They're pretty simple trucks, so I'm assuming there isn't a whole lot to go wrong with them, but are there any weak points on these trucks that I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your help!
Yeah, it kills me to see them kill it and try to say that Ranger guys will buy the V-6 F-150! It's beyong me why they aren't bringing the World Ranger here or why they aren't offering all of their diesel engines in the states.
Are there any inherent problems that I should expect with a Ranger? Ball bearings, brakes, anything like that?
There are no show-stopper reasons not to get a Ranger if you like the basic vehicle. It's been in production for 30 years and has been continually improved over that time, so it's a good reliable truck. Parts are cheap and easy to get, but if you get a new one, you won't have to worry about that for a while.
Thanks gents, I appreciate the help. Have any of you had any experience with a 4x4 model off road? I'm not looking to do anything crazy, just the occassional sandy road, snow, or gravel.
not alot of off-road 4x4ing, but alot of snow in winter. while my '88 2wd did pretty good in snow with proper tires & weight ballast, the 4x4 eats it up! doesnt take but 1 bad winter with a 4wd to never want another 2wd ever again, even in a state that might have a month of bad winter weather at most. the right tires for the conditions will do the most good no matter if its 4x4 or not. wide tires for sand, skinny all-terrains for snow, deep-cleated treads for mud. i personally like a store brand marketed through pep boys, its called the dakota futura and has a tread design very similar to the b.f.g. a/t.
Thanks Racsan! I used to have BFG A/T's on my 2WD Expy and I never even got close to getting stuck in mud or snow. I'll be looking into a shiny new set of those when I get my danger Ranger. I just wish it was easier to lift/ find lifts for the IFS (never been a fan of the IFS). But I'm sure I can still fit decent sized tires on. I'm looking forward to seeing what these little trucks are capable of. Though it's nothing like the diesel I have now, I get the feeling that I'm going to have a lot of fun in a Ranger!
