I'm fortunate enough to have a 12K pound winch on truck.
But if I can't use it, or it drags the truck, I resort to a stretchable recovery strap. I too have seen the results of snapping chains or cables. Fortunately, no deaths, but lots of blood and body damage (truck and occupants).
