I drove home from a 5hr trip, truck ran great.Next day started up just fine, then sttarted running on either 4 or 6 cylinders shut it off.Next day started it up it ran fine for about 10 seconds then started running bad again.doesn't blow smoke or anything like that but you can smell diesel thats excesive. Now it won't even start.Bought a code reader its bringing up a p1211 and a p1316 anyone have any idea?

UVCH (Under Valve Cover Harness) is my first guess, especially with the 1316 code. It's a very common problem and there are quite a few current threads or posts addressing this problem or referring to it in the 7.3L forum.

I was thinking FICM until I saw the codes. Exactly what happened when mine went. I am dreading having to do injectors, if you're in that far I'd seriously consider it.

I didn't change mine when I went in at 180k. It's not that bad to get to them and after you do it once it would be easier.

Ok. I'd assumed it was a 7.3L, but when Jay mentioned the FICM (found on the 6.0L PSD's) I realized I shouldn't have assumed!

My opinion on the injectors is no. First, you're not really that far into it. You're just taking the valve covers off and shimming the connection that comes loose. You can EASILY do that with a few tools and a couple spare hours. Injectors are a lot more intensive than shimming the harness.

Second, when you do decide to swap out the injectors, I'd strongly suggest you upgrade them and not just replace them with the same set of split shots. At the very least I'd go with a new set of AC codes, single shot injectors that need custom tuning. And before you do any kind of custom tuning, you wanna make sure you have intake, exhaust, and gauges first.

Why doesn't that make sense? That's very typical of the P1316 code.

You can ohm out the harness plug if you want, but when I had my UVCH problem, I didn't bother, I just bought the clips and installed them on each side.

A lotta guys opt to do the .50 cent mod instead of buying the clips. Ya just grind a quarter down and use them as shims (takes the place of those clips I linked you to), installing them in the harness clip.

If you would prefer to do your repair that way, lemme know and I'll post the link.

Sometimes it do, sometimes it don't.

Mine would start...at least it did a couple times...then it wouldn't anymore.
