Were headed to our deer lease right now in my 99 f250 SD diesel and filled up about thirty miles back. Were pulling about 2-3000 lbs and were already down to 1/4 of a tank. But were also in stop and go traffic going through Houston. I calculated it and its saying were getting 5.2 MPG. That doesn't seem right especially in a diesel. Anybody know what might be the problem or have any suggestions?

Stop and go traffic pulling a trailer...that sounds about right.
Did u leave it running when u filled it? Mine takes a long time to reach full when I leave it running. Sometimes 50 miles or more. If i cut it off and restart it, it will read right.
If that is not the case, i'd say something is wrong unless u have mega tires. My truck is a stock extd cab 2wd w/ 2657516 tires Slightly larger. I pulled a 3 horse gooseneck from east ga to eastern kentucky over monteagle TN and hand calculated 13.75. My truck does not have the lie o meter anyway. I did not run the crap out of the truck the whole time, but it work pretty hard over the hills. I maintained a speed of 55-60. I cannot remember the size of our tanks but I usually get 475 miles out of a tank if I run it until the light comes on. Thats not towing. I only do it once a month or so to get a feel for how truck is doing. Its been a year since I went on a long tow to use all the fuel but i regularly tow cars locally and it may only drop the total mileage 50-75 miles depending on what weight i towed. My truck is nowhere near as nice as a lot of the ones on here and definitely not as well maintained. But, I am extremely happy with the mileage it gets for its size and ability.
Well i think it was the stop and go traffic with that giant wind blocker of a deer stand sittin on it. filled up 3 times on the way there (~300 miles) and made it back on one tank. Thanks for the help. I think im still gonna check that EBP sensor just in case. Thanks again to everyone.

That still doesn't sound right. I can get 350 miles out of a tank pulling my 32' 10k lb 5th wheel and my truck is lifted on 35s. I would definitely do some checking. The only way to accurately calculate mpg on these trucks is fill them until you see the fuel coming out the neck and then calculate by hand. The overhead display is known to be inaccurate.
I'd run a few tanks through it and see what mpg you are really getting.
I was getting about 6mi to the gallon one time (empty) and pulled in to a truck stop to have the mechanic look at it. He was not on duty yet, but some old boy told me to put HEET additive in. I told him my "water in fuel" light was not on and his reply was "You're only out 5 bucks if it doesn't work." Well, within 25 miles or so it worked. So.......maybe try a $5 bottle of HEET water separator?
