My 2006 Lariat's rear bumper obstacle detection and avoidance beeper goes into the 'OFF' mode when I put the truck in reverse. Is there a straight forward way to troubleshoot the system without tossing $$ at the problem and hope you get lucky?
Thanks in advance!
Mike
More than likely one of the sensors is out, when one goes it takes the whole system w/ it. If you have or have access to a GOOD scanner I think it can tell you which one it is, otherwise it's probably just as easy to get a new one and start swapping until it works again. I've got one or more out as well but can't bring myself to pay $150 at the dealer for one.
The system turns itself off because it has sensed a problem. Usually that means a bad bumper sensor. The trick is to figure out which one. I seem to remember a thread where the guy listened for a click in each sensor to figure it out. Maybe try a search for that. But the quick way to find it is to go to the dealer and they have a diagonstic that identifies which sensor has failed. Once you know which one, you can find them on eBay for a good price.
I had tried that w/ mine and couldn't tell any difference. Maybe should have used a stethescope or something though.
Also, I agree that it's easier to take it to the dealer to figure out exactly which one it is...but then you pay $80-100 just to find out, or at least that's how it is at my dealer. Seems like someone would be money ahead to just buy a sensor and start switching. I haven't found one on ebay cheaper than $75, there's cheaper ones but based on the description i'm never 100% sure if it will work. I hate throwing parts at a problem too but sometimes it's just less painful.

Except, it might not be a sensor. Or it might be more than one sensor. Unless you really diagnose it, you might just be swapping parts. I would definitely try the click test, and I also thought a steth from the back side would be the best way for my tired old ears.

Good point, I hadn't considered the possiblity of more than one sensor being out. Duh.
