I have a '78 4x4 XLT that I've had for a few years, and this winter I'm going to start "restoring" it. I know that the truck itself is not rare, but I'm wondering if the color scheme is. It is solid orange, and I havn't seen many XLT's that are 1 solid color, in fact, I don't know if I've ever seen any that were one solid color except for this one. I figured it had just been painted at some point, and they were too cheap to keep it two-tone, but I've spoken to the original owner and he assured me that he bought it brand new that way. Its an XLT trailer special, so its pretty optioned out. I'm just wondering if its a rare color scheme and if I should keep it in case I ever think about two-toning it when it comes time to paint. I really like the two-tone combinations, but if this is rare, or even just unique, I will probably just leave it as the good Henry Ford intended it.
Does anyone have any production numbers breaking it down to paint colors?
Or maybe someone worked in a dealer in the 70's and remembers if they saw a lot of these or not?
Thanks!!
Two tone paint was just one of the many cost-added options that was available on any trim level truck. You could have a truck with 2 tone paint as the only option, or only one not added, it just depended on how the order sheet was filled out.
There were also several different ways to have the 2 tone arraigned. Some schemes were only available on certain trim levels, but there was a 2 tone option for most any trim level and option package.
