I have a 98 explorer with the keypad on the door. For some reason the lock does not want to unlock with the key. I know it is the right key and they keypad will unlock the door but I am looking to fix the lock just incase for some reason the keypad decides to stop working. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Starting with the new lock you can carefully remove the cover that retains the tumblers. Between the cover and the tumblers are springs so you need to make sure the cover doesn't just go flying off when releasing it. Once you have the cover and the springs removed from the new lock, do the same on the original lock once you remove it from the door. Remove all tumblers from the new lock, then hold your thumb over all but one of the tumbler cylinders, then carefully dump the tumbler and spacer out. Transfer them to the new lock, then move to the next cylinder, and so on. Do this for all 5 cylinders, then reinsert the springs and the cover. Try the key to make sure it works freely. Install the newly keyed, new lock in the door.
You pick up a new lock cylinder from Ford. Include all new tumblers, springs grease and chrome/black key covers to match your truck. You set the tumblers to match your key. This process should only take 30-60 mins depending on experience
