My son came in complaining that the key would not go into the lock on the driver's side door. Sure enough, the key would not budge the metal that covers the opening. I had noticed that the lock had been getting harder to turn and put it on the list of things to attend to--which I never did.
Any suggestions for a fix? Am I going to have to remove the inner door panel?
On my 80, you can removed the outside lock by pulling the clip that holds it in the door. The clip is on the door jamb, at the level of the lock, open the door and look at the end. After you pull the clip, pull the lock out of the door and take off the rod, don't drop it inside. You can shoot into the lock some graphite.
I spray out several times with some penetrating oil . No WD . get the slide to move and work key in and out . Then use the lube of you choice. I use silicon likes cold weather better. Later
I did the PB Blaster thing and worked the key in and out and it still was binding. I just removed the cylinder and ordered a new set from NAPA. Sixteen bucks for both. I'll put up with the minor inconvenience of having a different set of keys for the doors.

Reason: grammar
Soak your lock cylinder in acetone,be careful not to get any on the little plastic part that clips to the rod.Follow up with lube.Sounds like a prank with super glue.

Hmmm...it sounds like something one of the little s____ at his school might have done. I may give that a try.

You can have a locksmith redo the ignition switch to match the door locks, that way only one key. One other way, my father had a 79 LTD and a 73 Mavrick, he had a key cut on one side for the 79 LTD and the other side cut for the Mavrick, one key started both cars.
