They didn't report the gassy smell at startup like you are. So in their case the fuel was flowing back into the tank. In your case its leaking through the injector into the cylinder. This is why knowing all of the symptoms can make the difference between an accurate diagnosis and an incorrect one.
The job is done. #8 of course is a PITA due to not being double jointed and my hands are not the size of my 3 year old. Other than #8 it was pretty easy.
