Fuel Issue Revisited

OK, I'm gonna try this again with hopefully better symptoms...

1. Upon a cold start my exhaust smells pretty "gassy", but the smell is gone in about a minute. No visable exhaust or residue on the tailpipe.

2. I have a rattle or rumble on the driver side, sounds like its someplace mid-vehicle to the back. Not totally sure where.

3. Fuel pressure at 40 psi with KOEO then begins to slowly drop off.

4. No hard starting. It fires right up every time with zero problem.

5. Fuel economy sucks in town, but probably due to short 10 minute drives with stop signs every few blocks. 18 or 19 mpg highway is no problem at all.

I'd take the noise and the high mileage. I've never gotten beyond 15-16.

One of the injectors is leaking fuel down into the cylinder, causing an overly rich condition until the excess fuel burns off.

OK, guess I need to go with that. In another thread you mentioned to someone that thier fsalling fuel pressure was due to a bad check valve at the fuel pump. I just want to make sure I am on the right track.

They didn't report the gassy smell at startup like you are. So in their case the fuel was flowing back into the tank. In your case its leaking through the injector into the cylinder. This is why knowing all of the symptoms can make the difference between an accurate diagnosis and an incorrect one.

My injectors were sitting on the front porch this morning. So, this weekend I guess I will tackle that job and see what happens.

1. Count your o-rings when you take it apart to be sure that none of them get stuck up inside the fuel rail.

2. Lightly lube the o-ring with Vaseline before installing the injectors and they will slide it much easier, less chance of damaging them too.

The job is done. #8 of course is a PITA due to not being double jointed and my hands are not the size of my 3 year old. Other than #8 it was pretty easy.
