Mine is a 1988 f250 diesel, I bought it new, Its a standard shift, it does not look like yours, you have a electricians nightmare there lol. looks dangerous........
The PO of this truck thought himself a "electrical genious". It's an adventure sometimes tracking down problems, or which wires go where, or even which are still attatched...
You should be able to punch a hole near the steering shaft assembly, as there is a bit of a gap there. I know the 88's a little different but the engine compartment is laid out pretty similiar.
Where is the best place to put a new wire through the firewall without drilling?
if you choose to drill a hole look into the Daystar Firewall Boot. i got one and it is great. you can google them. they are a little pricey but they are worth it. fits a wide range of wires, seals the firewall, no chafing of the wires or tubing.
I really didn't want to drill a hole, thought there would be a place that the factory wiring would accommodate another wire. there is a bundle of wires that come through the fire wall on the drivers side, lower left, can that be removed or loosened to pass a single wire through? I am going to the Manual control of the glow plugs, need the place to run the wire to the glow plug relay........
I thought I would have gotten more responses to my ? am I posting in the wrong place?.........is there a forum that covers body parts, that would be a place to post this, I am new to this site, don't know my way around yet.there are a lot of ads, pop ups, keep getting off track, with such a great wealth of knowledge here. I bought this truck new in Feb.1988 it has 114000 miles on it, all by me, back and forth to the lake, for about 10yrs. rest is city driving. I did reg. maintenance myself, oil, filters ect. put on a fuel lift pump, water pump, fan clutch, only one fuel filter. front and rear breaks, just bought my fourth set of battery's, fourth set of tires.this truck still has five of the original glow plugs,
they check good.I am giving it to my grandson, he just got back from Iraq, he is going to school. the truck has been setting for five years, of course the batteries were no good, Advance Auto had a good buy on them, man the price of batteries has gone up! put them in, my grandson said it won't start, I told him it would start on the third try (glow plug controller) I let it short cycle three times and it started right up after 4 years, hope the fuel tanks are not rusted, had stabilizer in them, one was full, the other was almost empty, that is the one I am worried about being rusty, is there some good water absorbing adative to put in the tanks to take of the condensation that must be there, after all of this time? it still has the factory water hoses, except the top radiator hose.the heater was never very good, seems like the heater in the diesel was different than the gas trucks. the air conditioner never worked very good either.but it always got good fuel mileage around 19mpg, standard trans. w/o/d.
This is where all mine are run through.
Not sure if it's a factory hole, or if it was drilled by a PO, but it works for me.
That looks to be the hole for the clutch master cylinder on manual trucks. So its a factory hole, but only useful on trucks with an automatic transmission.
I think I remember seeing a hole someplace when I was running some wires, but not sure. Its not really a big issue to drill a new hole. You can get rubber grommets to fit the hole and stuff the wires through. Fill it up with RTV to seal it.
There's a couple spots that have existing rubber grommets around bundles, I often just sneak a knife through the rubber to cut a slit, then slide the wire through. I'm thinking these are grommets for hood cables, that kind of thing, rather than wires, but you'll see which ones I'm referring to.
If you think that pic above is a mess, I could show you my cc with plow, I think there's about 10-12 extra wires going through the firewall right now on that truck, and I have more to add yet for some additional lighting and a few other goodies.

I was wondering about that, the PO had been so useless at everything else I was wondering how he came up with such a good location for something like that, lol.
