What year?
what year did the flat tailgate straps change to cables? I know the 86 i had new was cables, both my 80 and 82 have straps, the 84 has no gate ....will try to keep the gate from my 82

I believe 1983 was the first year for the cables.

will the old hardware from say an 82 direct fit an 85 i may just have to find out
i like the straps much better

I put a cable tailgate on my 80, the pins on the bed are different, but I got the cables on with a bit of persuasion, otherwise went right on.

The tailgate area can be a headache. They changed the type of bolts, the type of latches, and some of the other hardware. I am sure you can make it work, but it may require drilling/re-mounting some stuff.

X2: what franklin said. Especially putting 1980-1982 hardware on a 1983-86 gate.

The other way round is much easier...

no i will be putting an 82 gate on an 84 bed, sorry i did not make it clear

well the tailgate was a perfect fit just took a side grinder to the bolts for the cables, took off about a 1/16 off the 12 o'clock, straps slipped right on gate shuts no binding
