Help...where in the world do you find replacement tailgate cables? I have searched high and low and the closest I can come up with is for years 83-86...and it indicates these are definitely not a compatible match. Thanks...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you really mean "cables"? The '81 had straps. Cables came out later.
The early models didn't have cables, they had metal straps that folded. You might not have the original setup on your truck. Just go to the local store and buy the newer cables and see if they fit, they all carry them.
Thanks guys...gave me something to go on! Trying to help my dad out and he swore they were nowhere to be found. Made a bet with him I could find them...no wonder I couldn't! He is original owner on the truck and I bear witness that it did have cables on it last. But, as noted it could very well not be the original setup. Was in an accident a long time ago and maybe they were changed out then... Appreciate it!
I have a set of these on my JY tailgate. I'll have to take them off as mine use a cable. They're not in very good shape but maybe you'll have better luck at your local JY.
Thanks again...think we are going to go with the 21-1/8" 83-86 cables as replacements. Measured it and think they will fit nicely. Appreciate the heads up on Green Sales Co... Have a good weekend!

I saw a set of straps at my local pull a part yesterday. They were on a 78. Maybe they would work. On my 82 it had one cable on it when I got it, I put another one from jy, cost about three dollars.
I saw a set of straps at my local pull a part yesterday. They were on a 78. Maybe they would work. THEY WILL NOT WORK!
Didn't you see the FORD PART NUMBERS and their APPLICATIONS I listed in post #8 for the 1980/82 straps, tailgate and etc?
Post #3 has similar info: The Right & Left straps are different and they include the latches!
1978 same right/left, do not include the latches and fit: 1964/66 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100/4WD / 1967/79 F100/350 = C4TZ-9944400-A.
Geez, it took me 30 minutes to research and type that crap, then you either failed to read it, or read post #3, or haven't a clue. If you don't know for sure, keep out, because all you're doing is confusing peeps.
The main reason they won't work is the straps 1964/1979 disconnect with a quick fitting at the latch and are bolted to the bed.
The 1980-1982 are the other way around. Bolted and riveted to the latch, and disconnects with a quick fitting at the bed. Presumably so the straps come off with the tailgate and don't rattle around with the tailgate removed.
NumberDummy - Do you know a good resource for classic mustang numbers? I have a 1969 with a C6 and there is a tag "ATO Racing Transmission Model 5600 ATO Performance products California 800 636 4ATO". The houseing has a large FOMOCO casting, but I'm trying to find out some info about this "ATO" trans ... original, factory, modified, rebuilt, non-original, etc. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ATO racing trans is not FoMoCo related. ATO is an aftermarket company, modified the original trans.
Thanks ... I can't seem to find anything on ATO or when they went out of business. Are you familiar with them? Was it modified pre or post production ... I assume post. I was able to find some casting numbers, but I think the numbers that match it to the vin are on top of the housing, and I'll have to drop the trans to verify - is that correct?
Thanks for your time, you're a super valuable resource.
