Same

Mine did that on my 352. I had to shim the starter out about 1/16 with washers. Works fine now.

In 385 series engines starters are flywheel specific. You must run an A/T starter with an Automatic trans, and a Manual Shift starter with a manual shift trans set up.

THe ring gear depth is different. Changing nose does not help because A/T starter has a shorter armature shaft than a manual starter.

This problem also happens when an FE Flywheel is substituted for a 385 flywheel. Some say they shim starter to get right mesh. But I'd say get the correct starter for the flywheel and use the correct flywheel for the engne and avoid all the hassle.

FWIW, FoMoCo starters are engineered to fit into a machined out receiver lip, with the anti flex-torque plate in position. This lip holds the torque load when starting. Not seating in the machined receiver area transfers the twist to the bolts and they are not designed to hold that. . . . It could cause starter drive, nose piece, and shaft problems or lead to premature starter or flywhel failure.

GM shims their starters and look at all the problems GM Starters have all the time.
