4.30 Gears, Why?

Why did ford start offering 4.30 gears instead of the 4.10's they always offered before that? What is the logic behind the 4.30 ratio, which I think started with the 3v modular V10?

Is this some magic ratio for these motors? Why isn't the new 6.2 gas motor offered with 4.10's?

The 4.30 was available as option in '99.
Very good gear set for heavy towing with stock tires on the V10 - keeps the engine in the meat of the powerband.

My experience exactly. The gear change from 373s to 430s was best mod I ever did to my '99 V10 Scab, 2WD.

The 4.30s came in with the V10 in '99. From 99-04 the 2V V10s were 3.73 standard, 4.30 optional. From 05-10 the 3V V10s were 4.10 standard, 4.30 optional. The move to the standard 4.10 was in part, I think, to offset the larger factory tire sizes introduced in 2005.

Because the 3.73s suck the big one in a gasser. I would have made 4.30s standard in all gasser 250 and 350 trucks made 99' and later. I'd rather see only 4.30s and 4.56 available. The 4.56s will be good for people who tow near max GCWR and/or want to put slightly larger tires on.

i saw a guy saying that he liked 3.08 gears lol.
honestly though, it probably seems a lot like having 4.56 gears except that you are down a gear... and first sucks.

one day, i'd like to swap 4.30 gears in, IMO a 5.4 NEEDS more gear than 3.73 to be useful for much other than just driving around.
even maneuvering around in dirt with a bed full of fire wood seems like a struggle some times.

And when you ordered the 4:30 gears, you got upgraded axle parts.

agreed..

the V10 and 3:73's is a AWFUL mix.. should never have been avialable if you ask me..

4:30's are a great starting point, should be a option for above that really.

At the risk of being accused of hijacking a thread, I am about to order a 450 and was wondering if it is better to go 4:30 or 4:10 This will be a steak body work truck pulling 12k on a regular basis plus maybe 2-3 ton in the back. And a plow truck. I'm thinking 4:30's am I right?

Well, I pull a 34' 5th wheel 11750 gvwr, and I am worried that the 4.30's will be too wound out with the little lt245 70r17 30.5" diameter tires...I would prefer 4.10's as an option.

i would go to the 6.2 forum and ask there. Final drive ratios with the 6 speed are different then the torque shift.

Could you please name your source on this? AFAIK the axle "parts" are the same regardless of the factory gearing.

What engine? What are all the ratio options?

I hope you mean a stake body, or are you hauling around slabs of meat?

With an F-450 and a diesel engine, I would select the 4.10 ratio. If gas engine, the 4.30 ratio. Why? Because the diesel engine has more low end torque.
