California does not require smog tests on personal diesels, only commercial diesels. When I lived in San Diego I was running only DP when I had it registered, no problem. rip all that crap off!!! Lol

From what I've read it depends on the county and the GVW... some counties in CA I've seen only test over 8500 GVW, some only test under 8500 GVW, etc...

In Oregon only Portland and Medford do smog tests and for diesels you are exempt if you are over 8500 GVW (which is good for me if I ever move there because my truck still has dually 10k GVW tags)

No worries there guys. I am actually a resident of Alaska and title all of my vehicles there. Very low fees and NO smog, safety inspection or other nonsense. The CAT will be deleted for sure.

If you are really looking to open up the engine's breathing you could delete to exhaust back pressure valve too. I don't regret doing mine.

...how much louder can I expect this truck to get without the cat and maybe a straight pipe. I don't mind some HP growl but don't want to have to add floor to ceiling dynamat and a 200 watt stereo.

It won't be much louder with a gutted cat, and as long as you keep the full length exhaust it won't be too much louder.

I went to a straight pipe with no cat on my truck and it is not nearly as loud as I thought it would be. It's not even full length...the pipe sticks out in front of the real wheel. The noticeable difference is you can hear the turbo now.

Yeah the turbo does a good job at quieting down the sound of the engine. The turbo whistle is crazy when you are pushing it hard above 2500 rpm!

if you go to my youtube page (the link in my sig) you'll be able to see all the various exhaust setups i've done. i've had just downpipe, downpipe with 4 foot of 4" straight pipe, and right now i've got just DP with a Banks Monster muffler (don't buy one, they're not worth it! lol) i'm just runnin that cause i already made the mistake of buying it and it does a decent job of quieting it down for the wife! lol i like the DP and 4" straight pipe best, but just DP sounds pretty great to me, just a little loud... lol
