Here goes everyone.
First, where can I get the 194-G bulbs for the dash other than the internet?
Second, I should cut out part of the rad core support so I go from a 300 size radiator hole to the V8 size right?
Third, I should get a fan shroud correct?
Next, I was working on my rear brakes, and I noticed my driveshaft was not perfectly straight. Is this something to worry about? The shifter shakes at highway speeds.
Finally, I have a mismatched cab and frame. From the same year and plant actually. But I don't know what gear ratios I have in front or back. What's the easiest way to tell?
Thanks in advance.
1. Don't know regarding these - I'm in New Zealand
2. You will need the bigger core - I guess if a V8 support isn't available, then cutting is an option. LMC, & probably others, do have reproduction supports.
3. Correct - I wouldn't neglect this - it makes a big difference to cooling efficiency, especially at lower road speeds.
4. I wouldn't neglect this either - apart from the droning & vibration, it's harder on the carrier, tailshaft, & pinion bearings. Long-term it can also become dangerous.
5. For an open axle (non-limited slip).......
Jack up one wheel, with the transmission in neutral (or the transfer case when checking the front axle), then mark both that tire, & the driveshaft with chalk.
While turning the wheel 1 turn (360 degrees), count the revolutions that the driveshaft makes. Double that number to get your axle ratio.
e.g. If 1 turn of the wheel gives you -
1.75 turns on the driveshaft x 2, = 3.54:1 axle.
Or 2 turns on the driveshaft x 2, = 4.11:1 axle
Or 1.5 turns on the driveshaft x 2, = 3.00:1 axle
If you have a limited slip axle & have trouble spinning the wheel freely, jack up & turn BOTH wheels 360 degrees together (easiest with two people), but DON'T double the driveshaft count. This will then give the correct ratio.
Thanks Ken Blythen. As a little side note, the hole in the radiator support looks like it has the V8 size hole, just with a sheetmetal filler, as the truck originally had the 300. Also, to anyone, is the junkyard the best bet for the stuff I need?
The ones at Autozone are Blazer brand, and are actually 168 bulbs, which will work fine for an instrument cluster. The covers are no longer there, just the bulbs with the color already on them.
