strange issue

I have a stock 2004 F-250 Lariat crew cab (125k +/-) and three weeks ago the gas cap (and later engine) light came on. I changed the gas cap and all was well until the tank got below 1/4. Then the same thing happened, the gas cap light came on and a day later the engine light came on. I can't see it being two bad gas caps in a row. It only came on after the tank dropped below a quarter and then stayed on. Is there a sensor that could have gone bad and when there is more vapor space in the tank it's not reading correctly? I'm kind of stumped and don't really want to go through 15 gas caps. had a friend read the codes and he said it was gas cap that came up, also visually checked the fill hose and vapor recovery hose on the tank and they look completely fine. Any ideas????
