Hi guys - I finally got my '62's engine and tranny swapped out with a 302/FMX combo and diggin' it. I'm using the original gas tank, but purchased a new gas cap to replace the old one due to the gasket being torn and I could smell fumes. Now when I take the new cap off after driving, there is a vacuum and I can hear the tank expand. I've actually replaced the new cap with another new cap thinking it may be defective, and they are a little different, but the problem is still there. Parts store guys are saying I'm using the correct cap. Any ideas? I did remove the tank to paint it; wondering if I may have unknowingly blocked a vent or something. While we're at it, the guy who helped me suggested I run 3/8 tubing from the tank to the carb instead of the 1/4" I'm currently running with. Thanks!
I always assumed the tank was vented inside the cab. I can always smell gas after filling until the tank is around half full.
Evidently yours IS vented inside the cab , which ain't right; however that can probably be fixed by replacing the rubber fill hose that connects from the fill pipe to the tank OR tightening the hose clamps!!

The sending unit's gasket is another cause. It's made of cork, shrinks, and/or cracks apart. Fumes then waft from the sending unit.
Peeps remove the sending unit, but usually don't replace the cork gasket when they reinstall it, so the gasket could be well over 40 years old.
btw: The fill hose (C1TB-9047-A - reproduced) is made of neoprene, not rubber. Gas will eat thru rubber within a short time.
Some unknowing peeps use radiator hose in lieu of the neoprene fill hose...Don't strike a match in the cab! KABOOM!
