Help Block Decoding!!
Hello Guys,
I am looking at an engine for my 62 4x4. The guy says it's a 428. I have had bad experiences with this is the past. I know the only way to know for sure is check the bore ane stroke, but can anyone decode the numbers since the engine is out of state? It is C8AE-~~~~-R. I can't remember the base seriesc, but the prefix and suffix are what's important. Thanks

1968, full size car, engine. The "R" denotes a revision. (someone may know which revision that was, not sure)
Based on what I've seen here repeatedly, there is no way to tell what you have from the casting info you give. You can tell what it ISN'T, because, for example, 352 and 406 motors were not produced in '68. That isn't very helpful.
Bore and stroke.
Everything is a 428 when they know you can't check before they get your money.

He says it's a 428 block..... the codes match. He has had it in his High Boy for 15 years and kept the engine when he sold his truck. I have been burned on engines before, but he has been very open and I believe. This code hass to be somewhere.
Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Registry click on component ID section then blocks. It'll show a std and cobra jet 428 block and some info. Look at the "A or C" sand scratches on the back of the block. There is also "S, CI" and a few others I forget at the moment. The same casting number was sometimes used on many different bore blocks besides the 428. So it's not effective as a positive ID method. There are also service blocks that have no casting number what so ever. You also want to access the area behind a few of the blocks freeze plugs. Dave Shoe on FE.com has his drill bit test where you use different drill bits to gap the space between the cylinder wall cores inside the block through the freeze plug hole. 428 and 390/360 used different cylinder molds. There's also a few other things you can look for on some specific 428 blocks. There's no exact ID method on some FE blocks no matter what the books out there say. 332-428 Ford FE Engine Forum search "drill bit test".
Use a dowel to measure the length of one of your cylinders through the spark plug hole when it's BDC. This should shed some light as to what crank it has which combined with casting info on the block might help you piece together if it's '428 or not.
