My dad acquired this engine in 1970. When he got the engine, it came with a 390 crank, rods, and heads (uninstalled). We wanted to know more information about the block. On what would be the passenger or right hand side of the engine, there is a small plate that says "C3AE", then directly underneath that is "6015AB". Also, HP 31 is cast into the block. On the lefthand side of the engine, "3B20:3" is cast into the block (NOTE-the 0 may be a 6). On the back of the block (in larger letters is HP followed by 24 underneath). The engine has 4 bolt main caps that also have some markings. When I measured the bore diameter with a crude set of calipers I got 4.216 inches. Does anyone know what all of this information means and what year this engine is OR do you know where I could go to find out. Thanks
Reading from a parts interchange book it states that casting numbers can be helpful but some blocks used several different casting #'s and in some cases one casting # cannot be interchanged with another. The 427 had bore size of 4.236 according to the book. I'm no expert on 427's so maybe someone else can help out also.
I apologize for using calipers but I don't have a dial bore indicator. I would like to elaborate a little about the supposed history of the block and pose a question. From what my dad was told, this engine was removed by the local dealership after ~500 miles because of water in the oil. The dealership replaced the engine block with another and this engine was supposed to be returned to the factory to be either inspected or fixed, however, it never made it. So at this point I don't know if there is actually something wrong with the block, or if someone got a slightly used engine through the good buddy system and the factory paid for it. Honestly, I don't know what happened over forty years ago. I am wondering what to do now? Now that you guys have verified what the engine is, what would you do to find out what shape the block is in and who would you trust to do this? By the way, I live in Western North Carolina if you know of anyone in charlotte, east tennessee, etc.... Thanks again for you help.
Need a BBC push rod (witch is cheap) and have it installed in the deck (the oil galley). I live out in the west coast. Sorry I cant help ya there. But a good machinist should know what to do LOL
