The head numbers between the center spark plugs will tell if it is a CJ or not. Is the tag on the dist. hold down bolt still? If they are standard 428 heads, then they are also 390 heads and then you need to be measuring stroke to find out if it really is a 428. Seen alot of 428s that were 390s. Sort of like 75% of the Chevy 427s were 396s.

If the engine is out of the truck/car look for a sandscratch A or C on the back of the block. A blocks for the most part were std 428's and the C blocks were the CJ/SCJ. Block casting numbers are PMU as they are generic and the same on many different bore FE and FT blocks. But the block casting number is on the right side of the block. This will at least timeframe the block and your looking for a 66 or later date code for a 428. This site has some good info and pics. www.428cobrajet.org click on component id then the part you want to see. It lists mostly CJ/SCJ parts but has some std 428 info also. If the engine is in the truck or car it can be difficult to tell exactly what you have. You can check the stroke to look for a 3.98 crank but the head needs to be removed to measure the cyl bore.
