Hey, I have 93 4x4 EXT cab, that I bought with 6'' lift and 35x12.5xr15 on it. I love look but gas mileage is killing me. Was wonderring if you guys had any ideas as to what size I could drop down too and still look good. Any ideas would help. Also what year factory rims will fit my truck as well.
With tires that much larger than stock your speedo is off quite a bit, according to one online calculator when the speedo is showing 49mph you're actually going 60 so you're pushing the truck faster than you think and burning more gas as a result. This also means the odometer is showing fewer miles driven than actual so fuel consumption calculations will look artifically low. You can fix all that by recalibrating the speedo, follow the link and complete the procedure.. HOW TO RECALIBRATE THE SPEEDOMETER ON 92-96 FORD F-SERIES AND BRONCO .: Articles
As for axle gearing, these trucks really aren't geared to handle that big a tire so a gear change would certainly help, but if you're going to drop down to 31's or 32's and the axles have 3.55's then that's probably OK, not great but better than what you have now. You should find the axle code on the drivers door decal and a list of what that translates to here... Ford Axle Code Chart .: Articles
Ultimately for best fuel milage you'll need to lose the lift completely, the higher the truck the more gas it'll burn, but if you don't do a lot of huighway driving it won't have as much impact.
