Steering characteristic

New 2011 ~1,000 miles. When traveling the I in the left lane, I actually need to maintain slight clockwise input to keep going straight; when in the right lane, the truck tracks as I would expect, but the wheel is a 'few degrees' clockwise of 'perfect'.

Had it in for an alignment and nothing has changed.

Is this simply a characteristic that I should accept?

Sorry I didn't see this before now Herman. If this is just occurring when you're in the left lane (pulling, that is), I would almost think that it might be a road characteristic such as the crown of the road.

As far as the wheel being a little off when in the right lane, I'm not sure why it's like that and I've never noticed it on mine. Geez, I'm going to be checking that now.

Thanks John, I was thinking crown-of-the-road as well; however, this wasn't an issue in my Navi and other Ford cars.

I notice a huge difference between this truck and my wife's Denali on the same roads too Herman. I do believe that there are certain characteristics of the steering in these trucks that take a little getting used to and aren't "the norm". I will say that the steering on this truck is better than that of the 2005 F-250 I had prior to this 2011.

Herman,

I had to take mine back to ford about 5 or 6 times to get it to stop pulling to the right. After two alignments, a replaced tire, and a replaced rim, it was still pulling. My steering wheel also was not pointed straight when traveling straight. Ford ended up calling a FSE and he recommended changing caster degree. He took out original casters and replaced with 1 degree casters and now truck tracks pretty straight. All of the technical stuff way over my head but hope that it may help your situation. Thanks, Mark

I have noticed my 2011 does the same thing. It will actually pull slightly the way the road is sloped either to the left or right. My 2001 F250 did the same. I felt this was normal behavior and not a problem.

I personally feel the SD steering is a little over-assisted and under-castered. It gives the feeling of looseness and wanders in the lane a little on the freeway. This is exacerbated by lifting or leveling but provides a great opportunity to make it steer the way the driver prefers. For me, I added extra caster and steering stabilizers. It tracks straight and the steering is firm now. Just the way I like it!
